using a pistol when doing a expedition is usually not advisable as it's damage is not that great and you'll have to carry bullets which just removes a slot from you're inventory. a better alternative is the hatchet as it deals almost the same amount of damage, without you needing to sacrifice a inventory slot, the only situation that using a pistol is advisable is when you are being breached and you have a lot of pistol ammo on hand.
